It is sometimes said music can transcend styles, age and most other barriers put to it. A live music event known as The Stage Benefit Concert was held at the G.A.S.A Clubhouse is proof that it can happen.

The purpose of the concert was to raise funds for the transport of a much-needed stage for GLMS. This stage will be used by all the performers at Summer Nights and other such events.

A great variety of performers joined forces for an evening of entertainment and musical diversity.

“The Individuals” Left to Right: Zoë Torres, Henry Attard, Steven Belilo (Drums) Keeran Slade and Ernest Slade

The first band to perform is a new concept band known as “The Individuals” which is not your traditional band with a steady line up. Instead “The Individuals” feature members from other bands or solo acts which change at each event. Having already played with success at “Bash X” last November, the band once again recruited an array of musicians and vocalists for the up and coming function.

On this occasion the band was made up by Steven Belilo (Ex Toy Zoë) on Drums, Keeran Slade on Bass Guitar (eazi-k) and yours truly on Lead Guitar (eazi-k). The band was fronted by 3 different vocalists, Henry Attard (Ex Toy Zoë), Michael Gonzalez (Ex All Gone) and the only female performer of the night Zoë Torres (eazi-k) who also played rhythm guitar. The Individuals played a variety of commercial rock covers from artists such as the Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis Morisette and U2.

Next were the function’s Special Guests, the ever-popular Adrian Pisarello and Eric Rowbottom duo.

They provided the crowd with energetic acoustic sounds and songs from well known bands like Estopa. Also a crowd favourite, the Travis version of Britney Spears hit single “Hit me baby one more time”. Their close-knit harmonies and contrasting vocal styles make for an exciting sound, which they have made their own.

Next was a totally different type of band. The newly formed Soul Survivor are a reggae band consisting of Andrew Ashwin on Lead Guitar & Vocals, David Victory (Spider) on Vocals, Brian Chipolina on Drums, David Candeas (Mr Lova) on Bass Guitar, and the youngest member of the band Luke Bosano on Keyboards. Although this exciting new band have only performed live a few times, they seem to have been together longer and sound very mature. The instrumental parts are well rehearsed and sound tight and their main feature of having two lead vocalists works very well with Andrew singing in the style of Ali Campbell of UB40 whilst David provides a sound more akin to traditional reggae with an occasional fast spoken passage.

A fantastic performance, which got the audience going with their infectious reggae rhythm.

Now later into the night the well-known Punk quartet Underhill were set to close the evening with their heavy punk sound. An excellent performance full of feeling and emotion came from this great band that once again rocked the audience with their guitar crunching performance. My personal favourite was their upbeat version of Aerosmith’s hit song “I don’t want to miss a thing” from the Movie “Armageddon”.

In conclusion a great concert, which truly showcased the great variety of musical talent that exists in Gibraltar.
